It's a great shame that some religions, do not permit its followers to enjoy pork or alcohol.

I don't believe there is a single problem in the world, that couldn't be resolved by a civilised discussion over a bacon sandwich and a pint.

Well, either that or the the application of the appropriate amount of high explosives.

if you eat meat - then you have to EXPECT this kind of shit going on.

I think I'll trust the British Veterinary Association on this one.

BVA’s campaign calls for the end to slaughter without pre-stunning for all animals as scientific evidence shows that non-stun slaughter allows animals to perceive pain and compromises animal welfare.

Then I agree with you on that.

Except I am not sure that in the truest sense the UK is a fully secular state. Not while the Head of State and Supreme Governor of the CoE.

I do understand. And I am against both halal and kosher slaughter as well as currently proscribed methods.

I see all forms of religious slaughter as an invasion of religion into the secular state.

In a past life many ears ago (45) I worked in a abbatoir, it was not Halal, (rare then), believe me I didn't last very long. Horrible!

Kosher and Halal slaughter is legal within UK law. Has been for very many years.

Other types of animal abuse at slaughterhouses are not - like the ones reported here.

This may or not be decent or moral but it is what it is.

Do you understand that?

I do condemn it. Just as I do any animal cruelty, anywhere.

But I'm not going to get extra upset because it's Halal. That's kind of missing the point, which the Daily Mail wants. Why are they reporting this, when it happens all the time, up and down the country in all kinds of settings? Any newspaper could run an investigation lasting all year highlighting animal cruelty but the DM choose to run a story like this. It's not about animal cruelty, it's about Muslims and is so transparently loaded it's untrue.

Sorry if my thinking that offends you. FWIW I think Halal slaughter is barbaric and inhumane - that's more of a problem to be tackled for me.

Re: Halal cruelty back in the news...
Any slaughterhouses any farming businesses producing meat/poultry that do not meet legal animal welfare guidelines should be closed down.

If people feel that strongly about halal/kosher being legal then use your democratic right and lobby your MP.

Or you can just swear a lot about Muslims on WHO. That will make a massive difference.

Re: Halal cruelty back in the news...
So, in short, the argument is, because the authorities do not currently enforce animal cruelty and other regulations pertaining to slaughterhouses with sufficient rigour, we should just give up on the law and just allow halal and kosher or any other sort of cruel methods?

Re: Halal cruelty back in the news...
I have some sympathy with some of what WHOicidal says but mainly from the perspective that I would like to believe that the laws applicable to slaughterhouse could be enforced more robustly - even if the industry had to pay for it.

I do eat meat, not every day, but do enjoy it. I am happy to trade a few years off my life in exchange for a diet that I enjoy. I don't see the objective of life solely as living as long as possible.

Really? That Islamic scholar based several hundred miles away said "recently"... in 1999. So, 16 years ago.

You're scraping the bottom of the barrel if that's the best you can do to scaremonger about Muslims in Europe is to quote a Muslim based in the Gulf from something he said 16 years ago.

Halal is cruel so playing the 'poor, put apon, moaning, oh our cult is being attacked act' is tiresome.

http://www.peta.org/blog/cruelty-behind-muslim-ritual-slaughter/

Animals killed halal (according to Islamic law) cannot be stunned before their throats are cut, which means that many animals—including the cow shown in this video—fight and gasp for their last breath, struggling to stand while the blood drains from their necks.

This thread has a lot of comedy potential.

Muslim bashing, lettuce wankers and rib gobbling carnivores fighting their corners.

For the record I eat a lot of red meat, I like it and I don't care how it's killed so long as it tastes good.
